The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is finally here and not only will there be 200,000 spectators making their way to the famous event, but more than 600 CAMS officials will also be in attendance.

And without them, the event simply could not take place.

Many officials dream of heading the country’s biggest event for the year and while some make it there in the early years of their careers, it took Jacqueline Devereaux almost 10 years before getting a chance to get to the mountain.

Having been a CAMS official for more than 15 years, Devereaux was content with doing other events and watching the great race from the comfort of her own home, before volunteering at the Bathurst 12 Hour six years ago.

Since then, she’s has been hooked.

The picturesque circuit’s beauty mixed with the long and rich history convinced her it was time to spend more time at Bathurst and volunteer at the mountain, a place she hasn’t stop attending since. 

“I am really looking forward to it. I have done it a few times. This will be sixth time as an official at Bathurst,” Devereaux said. 

“It took me while to get there because it is one of those traditional events where you like to watch it on the television.

“My first time officiating there was really good. Doing the 12 Hour at Forest Elbow convinced me that I should go to the 1000 and I haven’t looked back since.

“It’s an iconic track and we are close to the action, right on the edge of the circuit there. It doesn’t matter where you are, it’s always a good spot. There is always something to see.”

In the six years that she has been volunteering at Bathurst, there are many moments that have made history, including Scott McLaughlin’s history making lap record, Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richard’s huge 2013 win and Chaz Mostert’s sensational crash in 2015. 

While there was no particular highlight that resonated with Devereaux, she said the atmosphere of the event remained unique, no matter the vantage point.

“It’s just great every time. I have worked all around the place, which is good because it is a different experience at every post.

“I have worked at a few good corners like Conrod, which is really fast and there is a lot of overtaking, as well as turn one where cars get into the gravel.

 “I have one of the best spots in the house.”

The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 takes place in Bathurst on 10-13 October, with the main race starting at 11.30am on Sunday 13 October.
