Power's willpower on show in Detroit win

Monday 06 June, 2022
Will Power has shot back up to the top of the NTT Indycar Series standings after an incredible win in the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

After what proved to be a difficult run in last month’s famous Indy 500, Power was back to his best in Detroit as he produced a marvellous run through the field.

It looked like it was going to be another tough weekend for the Queenslander as he qualified in 16th having looked to struggle for pace throughout the session.

However, when it came to the race, some fierce driving and good strategy helped Power get the lead by lap 15 – a position he held for the remainder of the 70-lap race.

Remarkably, Power’s biggest challenge for the lead came from another driver who started outside the top 10 in Alexander Rossi – the duo enjoying an exciting climax to the end, despite no real wheel-to-wheel racing,

With Power having had a commanding lead when he took his last pit stop on lap 50, Rossi found himself 10 seconds behind by the time Power came out and began hunting down the Australian.

As the laps counted down, Rossi continued to gain seconds on Power, who was managing his fading tires only one second separated the duo when they entered the final lap.

Power managed to hold onto the lead to reach the chequered flag first and claim his maiden win for the season and 41st Indycar career victory,

It was a day of redemption for Power who suffered heartbreak at last year’s corresponding race and the 41-year-old was thrilled to come away with the win at the series’ last ever run at the famous Belle Isle Street Circuit.

"It was a very, very good performance mentally for me," Power said post-race.

"I always judge my performances and I really left nothing on the table and I got right in that sweet spot in the zone. That's how I was able to pump out quick laps."

Unfortunately the round proved another difficult weekend for three-time Supercars Champion Scott McLaughlin, who finished 19th despite having run in the top 10 for the first part of the race.

Power now leads the series after seven rounds with Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson sitting in second place just three points behind, while McLaughlin dropped to 10th as a result of the weekend.

It’s back-to-back rounds for the NTT Indycar Series, with the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America to take place in Winconsin on Sunday.
