The CAMS South Australia State Circuit Championships has held its final round for 2018 at the Mallala Motorsport Park with five categories hitting the track.
It was a tough day at the office for most of the categories with a majority of drivers fighting for survival as all fields ended the day smaller than they started.
Kicking off the state’s final round was the Saloon Cars and HQ Holdens as Commodore VT pilot Peter Holmes put on a dominant display to win all four races.
As the only driver not behind the wheel of Holden, Holmes was too good for the remaining drivers with Darren Jenkins finishing second outright thanks to four runner-up finishes.
Despite finishing the opening three races in third, David Smith nearly lost his outright podium finish to Tim McNamara who finished in fourth after a frantic final race.
In Formula Vee, two opening race wins to Sabre 02 pilot Benjamin Forgan set up his outright victory over Brian Pedersen, the Jacer F2K driver having to settle for second outright following a costly third in the second race.
Finishing above Pedersen in the second race was another Jacer driver in Joel Oliver, the V2K pilot securing the final step of the podium after finishing third in every other race.
Joining Holmes as the only other driver to take out a category clean sweep was a dominant Martyn Ewer, the Porsche pilot claiming four wins out of four races.
More than 20 drivers gridded up for the Sports Cars/Improved Production category at the start of the day but it was Ewer who got off to the best start, his first in qualifying setting up his four wins.
Behind the wheel of the slick Ferrari 458, Paul Mitolo was the only other driver to finish on the podium in every race, his good form rewarded with second outright, while Anthony Giustozzi recovered from a slow start to end the day on the podium thanks to his two thirds in the afternoon.
Andrew Ford got off to the perfect start in Racing Cars, only to crash out in the second race and end his hopes of final round victory - Daniel Gonzalez on Ford’s misfortune to claim the remaining three races and the round.
Ford wasn’t the only driver to end their day early with other contenders in Ian Hills and Tim Kuchel also having to finish in the third and fourth races.
With half the field not making it to the end, the rest of the podium was decided by consistency as Samuel Woodland took home an outright runner-up finish over Jim Doig.
The final category of the day was the largest with 26 competitors taking part in the popular Stillwell Hyundai Circuit Excels, which saw Michael Clemente and Asher Johnston share the spoils.
Johnstone showed his home ground advantage taking out the opening two races ahead of before Victorian finished the next two races ahead of Johnstone.
Rounding out the podium was Daniel Errigo thanks to his two finishes.
While the Johnstone and Clemente shared round , it was Clemente who had the last laugh, taking out the outright series over Johnstone and Errigo.
