The Group S Racing Association’s 2018 season has come to a close after an action packed season finale at Sydney Motorsport Park for the HSRCA Historic Tasman.

With three concurrent state championships each year, with three categories SA, SB and SC, there is plenty of silverware up for grabs come the end of a busy season. 

Wayne Seabrook was the man to beat during the round, claiming a clean sweep over the rest of the completion including the Group S Enduro, ahead of the Porsche 911 of Bryan Taylor, and the MG Midget of Andrew Sebesfi.

Seabrook’s emphatic victory also sealed the Catalina Cup for the SC category, making it the perfect ending to a brilliant season for the New South Welshman.

Rounding out the outright Catalina Cup for SC were Porsche 911 drivers Douglas Barbour and Geoff Morgan.

In the Catalina Cup for the SB category, Kent Brown won by just one point over Simon Meyer (Austin Healey Sprite), and his brother Damien Meyer (MG Midget). 

In the Catalina Cup for the SA Category, round runner-up Andrew Gibson (Triumph TR3) snuck past both Colin Goldsmith (Austin Healey 3000) and Greg Prunster (Austin Healey Sprite) to win the SA category.

Group S competed at no less than fourteen events across five states in 2018, with a special opening round at the iconic Bathurst 12 Hour, and a first time visit to The Bend with the Shannons Nationals.

The New South Wales’ Catalina Cup, the Victorian’s Goldfields Cup and the Queensland based Capricorn Cup, allow competitors to scores points in both home and away events. 

While Seabrook also went home with the Capricorn Cup for SC after his results in Sydney and QLD earned him first place for a Queensland away leg.   

After a successful year, which saw more than 360 individual entries across five states, Group S Racing Association Inc. President Alex Webster was thrilled with the positive position the club found itself in.

“This year we had more than people competing which was 18 per cent up on 2017,” Webster said.

"Along with having a series sponsor in Gulf Oil Australia for 2018 and now confirmed for 2019, it clearly shows we’re maintaining and increasing our interest from around the country which is fantastic.

“We continue to see new cars and members join the Group S, which is brilliant, in a time when unfortunately many other historic categories are declining."

At Bathurst, Group S's popularity showed they had 60 cars competing, while at Phillip Island Classic they had the highest entry list with 65 vehicles on the grid.

 “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of all the State Championship categories as well as Kent Brown, Wayne Seabrook and Tony Antoun who attended the most events during 2018 with seven each.

“We are all looking forward to another big season in 2019 starting at the Bathurst 12 Hour.”
