The much-anticipated Ford Mustang has made the perfect to start to life in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship after a strong showing in a day-long test at Phillip Island.

With all 24 cars hitting the track for the first time in 2019, four of the top five fastest times belonged to the new Mustang, with Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters fastest.

It took Waters a long time to get started but once the car warmed up, so did he, posting the day’s best time of just over a minute and a half on his 76th lap, his final for the day.

However Waters’ fastest time came by the smallest of margins ahead of another Mustang driver, Fabian Coulthard finishing with the session’s second fastest time just one-hundredth of a second behind the Waters.

Like Waters, Coulthard managed to post his fastest time on his final lap for the day, while Waters’ Tickford teammates - Chaz Mostert and enduro driver James Moffat - ensured a Mustang top three , steering their #55 to the third fast time on their 77th and final lap of the day.

Finishing just outside the top three was David Reynolds and co-driver Luke Youlden who flew the olden flag, as the Commodore ZB pilots used just 19 laps to pick up their best time for the day.

Rounding out the top-five behind the Reynolds and Youlden Commodore was another Mustang driver in Will Davison, the 23Red Racing main man getting his good work rewarded on the 61st lap of the day.

Scott McLaughlin set the pace early, the reigning champion ending the day in eighth behind Anton De Pasquale and the partnership of Scott Pye and Warren Luff.

Also having a test to forget was Triple Eight’s Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup with the Red Bull Holden Racing drivers ending the day in 14th and 19th respectively.
