The first CAMS South Australian State Motor Racing Championships for this year kicked off at Mallala as five categories each held their respective first rounds of the 2019 season.

Headlining the action packed day which saw four drivers dominate their categories, was the GH Haulage Circuit Excels as more than 30 cars qualified for the four-race round.

Taking out a category clean sweep was 2018 Victorian Burson Future Star award winner Michael Clemente, who enjoyed an intense battle with original pole sitter Asher Johnston all day, as Clemente flexed his muscle and won all four. 

The fight for the podium’s final spot was between Danny Errigo and Thomas Benford and at the end of the day, nothing could split the two as each driver picked up two thirds, a fourth and a fifth.

In the Formula Vees, Adam Newton took out every race over runner-up Peter Hood to claim a clean sweep of the category.

Rounding out the top-three over Ron Stevens was Robert Surman, who improved on his position in every race as the day went on, claiming fifth, fourth and third as a DNF to Hayden Slattery sin the final race saw Surman slide onto the podium.

The Historic Touring Cars/HQ Holdens field saw two other cars dominate the category as Brett Munns managed to secure three consecutive victories in his Holden Torana GTRXU1, while Kym Burton steered his Ford Falcon to three runner up finishes.

It could have been another Falcon on the podium, however despite picking up two places, a DNF in the final race to Adam Smith saw HQ Holden pilot Darren Jenkins finish outright third.

The final clean sweep of the day went to Wolf GB08CN pilot Daniel Gonzalez who picked up three wins out of three races in Racing Cars, making him the clear winner. 

A mixture of up to five drivers finishing in the top three saw Van Diemen RF88 pilot Philip Oakes end the day in second after two podium finishes, while Keith Williamson was one of the only drivers to finish in the top five in every race, earning him outright third.

The final category of the day saw Paul Mitolo claim top honours in a three-category combined round with Sports Cars, Improved Production and Sports Sedans all sharing the track.

Taking out the category thanks to two race wins was the Ferrari 458 Challenge driver, while Anthony Giustozzi’s sole race win and two podiums was enough to secure him second place in his Porsche 997 over Kevin Chapley, who ended the day with two race runner-ups. 

The next CAMS South Australian State Motor Racing Championship event for the year will take place at on 29-30 June.
