The CAMS New South Wales Motor Race Championships have kicked off for 2019 with Wakefield Park hosting six categories for the year’s first round.

Headlining the action was the Production Touring Cars, with Michael King winning two races and topping the points table ahead of the 24 other drivers competing.

King didn’t have it all his way across the weekend though, as Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge driver Jimmy Vernon took out qualifying and the opening race before facing clutch issues and was forced to an early retirement. 

Rounding out the outright podium was Tony Virag and Matthew Holt, with Virag’s third and two runner-up finishes enough to earn him the podium's second step over Holt. 

A dramatic final race in the HQ Holdens saw Christoper Molle win the round after beating number one seed Brett Osborn by five seconds in the all important trophy race, while Glenn Deering finished third.

Osborn had dominated in the lead up to the round’s final race, picking up the two wins over Molle, however some brilliant driving from Molle in his 1973 Holden HQ saw him secure a tremendous victory. 

Like the HQ Holdens, the SuperKart Championship’s final race of the event determined the weekend’s results as Tony Moit won the outright round after winning two races, while Aaron Cogger won the final race after working his way towards the front across each race. 

Cogger would be ruing his first race, a third place behind Lee Vella costing him what could have been the round win. Despite Mark Robin finishing second and third in the final two races, constancy from Mick Doherty saw him end the round in third. 

Taking out a comfortable clean sweep in the Formula Vees was Stephen Butcher, however all the action was happening behind him as a three way battle for the remaining two spots on the podium across the weekend. 

Fighting for the spots were Simon Pace, Craig Sparke and Dylan Thomas with all drivers posting a second, third in each race, however a fifth to Pace in the second race saw the battle between Sparke and Thomas for the longer final race, which Thomas eventually finished above Sparke.

The Kumho Tyres NSW Sports Sedans also had a dominating driver as Birol Cetin topped the field in every race to secure the round win, while Scott Reed finished second and Simon Copping took out third place. 

Reigning category champion Steven Lacey had an opening race to forget registering a DNF before redeeming himself in the reaming two races to pick up to runner-up finishes.

Holding the most races throughout the weekend was the Historic Touring Cars and Brad Tilley put on a masterclass in his 1966 Ford Mustang to claim all four races and start the season off on a high.

The only other driver to finish on the podium in every race was Chris Thomas, the Holden LJ Toran driver ending the first two races in third behind Michael Anderson before ending the weekend with two runner-up finishes. 

Despite finishing the first three races in the top three, Anderson did not take part in the fourth and final race, costing him his outright second as Adam Walton’s three fourths saw him take out the final step.

The next round of the CAMS New South Wales Motor Race Championships will take place on 6-7 April.
