Scott McLaughlin has won a dramatic second race on the streets of Adelaide to go back-to-back and claim the outright Superloop Adelaide 500 round. 

From start to finish, the reigning Supercars Champion stayed in the top end of the field, eventually having a comfortable ending to the time certain race after getting out to a lead of up to five seconds within the final 10 minutes of the race. 

While McLaughlin cruised to his second race win of the year, eventually winning by just under three seconds, all eyes were on the intense battle for second place as fellow Ford Mustang pilot Cam Waters managed to beat last year’s round winner, Shane van Gisbergen, to secure his best finish in Adelaide.

Waters’ performance was one to behold as he spent the last 15 minutes of the race holding off the fast charging van Gisbergen on much older tyres, the Tickford driver out-manoeuvring the renowned overtaking specialist.

Another entertaining battle occurred a further 16 seconds behind the front three, as Tim Slade overcame a disappointing first race to beat Nick Percat by six tenths of a second and secure a brilliant fourth place as the first local South Australians home.

Coming in just outside the top five was Mark Winterbottom, who made up a remarkable 18 spots after starting the race from the back of the grid in an encouraging debut in the Commodore.

It was a fantastic drive from Winterbottom who had a Saturday to forget, with the Irwin Racing driver finishing above long-time rival Jamie Whincup after the two were neck and neck in the final stages of the race. 

Rounding out the top-10 was Will Davison, David Reynolds and Todd Hazelwood, with the 2017 Dunlop Super2 Series winner picking up the best result of his Supercars career in front of his home crowd.

While the Ford Mustang enjoyed a one-two double, McLaughlin’s teammate Fabian Coulthard and Tickford Racing’s Chaz Mostert had a disastrous day in their new cars, ending the second race in 18th and 20^th after both drivers suffered pit-lane penalties.

Mostert was also involved in the race's most chaotic moment after colliding with Rick Kelly in the pit lane, forcing both drivers to blockthe lane as other drivers slowly made their way through past the pair. 

McLaughlin’s victory marks a perfect start for the Ford Mustang and DJR Team Penske as the team topped three practice sessions, both qualifying sessions and both races ahead of the second round in two weeks.

The next round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, the Melbourne 400, will play out at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 at Albert Park on 14-17 March.
