Extra F1 points on offer
Tuesday 12 March, 2019
Bonus points are now on offer for the driver and constructors who achieve the fastest lap in each F1 race.
Bonus points will now be awarded to the driver and constructor who achieves the fastest lap at each race this season, beginning with this week’s Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.
An extra point will be awarded during each race of the season, providing the driver finishes in the top-10.
The new rule means that an extra 21 championship points can be gained across the year, giving teams extra incentive to aim for the fastest lap and score vital points.
The rule was addressed during a recent FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting, with the council approving the change to the 2019 Sporting Regulations subject to an e-vote.
Following the successful outcome of the e-vote held by the F1 Strategy Group and the F1 Commission, approval was given for the rule to be used for 2019 and beyond.
The new Formula 1 season begins at Albert Park in Melbourne for the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 on 14-17 March.
