Kew’s Trinity Grammar School has continued its dominance in the F1 in Schools Nationals after taking out victory at the 2019 Australian final.  

After more than a decade of excelling in the hi-tech STEM, a program focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the Victorian based high school beat 35 other student F1 teams in the final to add to its 2005 and 2017 National titles.  

Trinity’s winning team, ‘Evolve’ took top honours over New South Wales teams’ 'Pentessellate' from Mount View High School and Penrith Christ School’s ‘Vectory’. Another New South Wales team, Thrust Vector from Blue Mountains Grammar School won the Development Class targeted at first time entries from years five to nine. 

While there were 35 teams in the two-day final held over two days at the Robert Bosch headquarters, up to 1,500 teams across the nation took part in the program which saw the participants involved in the curriculum-based program each week.

Since last year, the student teams have been working on designing a small F1 car capable of accelerating from 0-80kms in one second using sophisticated 3D CAD and aerodynamic simulation software. The teams then had to make the car using smoke and wind tunnels, 3D printers and other industry standard manufacturing equipment.

The 35 successful teams who made the Nationals Finals were then rewarded for their efforts by visiting Formula One teams' pit garages at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.  

‘Evolve’ will now represent Australia at the World Finals at Abu Dhabi later this year where they will face teams from up to 50 nations in what is the largest STEM competition made up of 90,000 students.

Australia currently holds the record for most World Championships with six in total, the most recent being last year.
