The second round of the CAMS Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship has taken place at Baskerville Raceway with six categories having four races each in an action packed day.
Unlike most championship rounds, the state’s second circuit round saw each category take on a special double points race that played a big role in determining the podium in some of the categories.
Josh Webster has continued his season battle with Peter Kemp after the former took out a clean sweep of the Snug Butchery Tasmanian Hyundai Excel’s four races to win the weekend.
Webster was never really troubled throughout the whole weekend as Kemp suffered a penalty in the second race to drop to sixth. However following a brilliant final two races, he overtook Grant Seamer to finish outright second.
In the Stateline Freight Tasmanian Sports GT A/B & Sports Sedans, sole Sports Sedans representative Brett O'Shea has steered his VH Commodore pilot to an outright victory after claiming three wins.
The results were the same in the first, third and final races for the day as Stephen Noble and Peter O’Keefe finished second and third respectively to make up the remainder of the podium.
It was the second race of the round that could have upset the final results as Alex Williams came from 16th in the first race to win the second race outright.
However that's as good as it got for the RX7 pilot as he scored no more points for the weekend. Noble’s outright runner-up saw him claim top spot in the GT4 class.
The closest competition of the weekend came in the SRT Logistics Historic Regularity as four drivers were in the running to for top honours in the category.
Two race wins to Brett Mansfield, including the double points race, was enough for the Holden Commodore pilot to secure a two point victory over Wayne Lamont and Craig Trenham – the pair ending the weekend on equal points. Finishing one point behind the two drivers was Darren Stoward.
Race one winner Jeremy Bennett was on track for a podium finish after finishing fourth in the second race but failed to start the remaining two races thus ending his charge.
Historic Touring cars, Improved Production & Tasmania Sports GTC shared the track for their four races as Nissan 200 SX pilot Matthew Grace’s three wins was enough to secure the Improved Production and outright victory.
Leigh Forrest was the undisputed runner-up for the round in both class and outright after finishing second in all four races, while Jared House sealed the final spot on the podium thanks to three top three finishes.
Behind the wheel of the Toran Xui, Scott Cordwell took home the Historic Touring Car victory, while Scott Smith and his Porsche 964 was the GTC winner.
Wade McLean picked up a clean sweep in The Trendy Cut Meats Sorell Formula Vees, while the double points race provided last minute drama in the round for the battle behind him.
Richard Gray finished second in the opening three races ahead Justin Murphy, however Murphy managed to sneak in front of Gray on the second last lap in the final race to finish ahead of his rival.
It wasn’t enough though, as Gray’s earlier hard work paid off and he finished second outright.
Andrew Toth has pulled off a miraculous come-from-behind round victory in the HQ Holdens after winning the double points race and securing victory.
Toth finished third in the opening two races behind Phil Ashlin and Andrew Bird, however when it came to the all important double points race, Ashlin came last and Bird failed to finish effectively handing the round win to Toth.
The fourth race for the category was a unique handicap race which Otis Cordwell won comfortably, more than five seconds separating him and the next best paced drivers in Ashlin and Toth.
The third round of the CAMS Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship takes place in June.
