The CAMS Victorian SuperSprint Championship second round for 2019 has seen Wayne Mack take out a convincing win at Sandown Raceway.
Hosted by the Maserati Club Of Australia, more than 50 drivers from around the state congregated in Melbourne to battle it out across three groups and race against the clock.
Unlike most competitions where competitors post their fastest time as the event goes on, the event saw a host of strong performances right from the get go as Mack won the round in his first official session of the day.
Completing 11 laps in the session, Mack trailed SV GTS VT pilot Gregory Lynch for the opening five laps before putting on his perfect run just four laps later.
Mack’s time of one minute and 14 seconds remained unbeaten throughout the whole day as Lynch eventually settled for third place, his time of one minute and 17.05 seconds happening on just the fourth lap of the session and he was not able to better it for the rest of the day,
Finishing in between the two drivers was Peter Fitzgerald, the Porsche 997 pilot managed to secure a runner-up finish in the seventh session for the day, which was also his first time on track too.
Fitzgerald still finished behind Mack in the session but on just his third lap, was able to surpass Lynch by just two tenths of a second thanks to his time of one minute and 16.83 seconds.
There was an even closer battle rounding out the remaining spots in the top five as just over one and half tenths of a second separated Timothy Blakeney and Doug MacLeod.
Incredibly both drivers recorded their fastest time on their fourth lap of the third session with Blakeney and his Ford Falcon coming out on top and resting for the remainder of the session.
Behind the wheel of the Mazda Rx7, MacLeod continued to push out laps in the session but was unable to come close to the Falcon’s time and had to settle for a comfortable fifth place finish.
With the weather playing a major role on the day’s outcome, Maserati Club Of Australia’s Timothy Shepherd was proud of the event running and the hard work of all involved.
“It was fantastic day of competition despite the weather being quite difficult at times," Shepherd said.
“There were a few incidents to occur throughout the event and some oil spills as a result, but overall everyone was really positive about the event and no one was injured which is the main thing
“Both competitors and officials were outstanding all day and of course the success couldn’t have been achieved without their contributions."
