Former Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia champions Jaxon Evans and Matt Campbell have both enjoyed successful weekends with podium placings in their respective categories.
Evans had a dream start to his international debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Hockenheim circuit, with the 22-year-old qualifying third and second in both of the one-make category’s races.
Although the first race was held in wet conditions, Evans got off to a superb start, moving up to second place before the first turn.
His brilliant move was short-lived through as he turned wide on the hairpin later in the lap to drop to third and then on the next lap he lost another place to end up in fourth, although he eventually regained third spot and finished the race on the podium.
Despite Evans being excluded from the results post-race due to his car being fitted with a non-compliant part, the Porsche Junior was thrilled with the start of his career abroad.
“To finish third at my debut race in the Carrera Cup is a super start to the season,” Evans said.
“I’m not really familiar with wet asphalt in Australia, so I found the first laps a bit tricky and I found myself in the run-off zone in lap one. But the track dried up quickly soon after.”
Starting on the front row in the second race, Evans went hard for the lead but as a result of his challenge, lost momentum and was squeezed down to third.
Unlike the first day, the conditions were better and Evans was able to comfortably guide the Porsche to another podium finish, for which he was finally able to enjoy.
"At first I was a bit disappointed that I could not defend second place. But the competition is high here, so third place feels good,” Evans added.
With the next round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland to take place on 17-18 May at the Autodrom Most circuit in the Czech Republic, Evans wlll use the week off to compete in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup as part of the Spanish Grand Prix.
While Evans was enjoying his international debut in Germany, Campbell continued his rise in Europe, claiming a LMGTE-AM victory during the penultimate round of the FIA World Endurance Championship Super Season at Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps.
Partnered up with Christian Reid and Riccardo Pera for Dempsey Proton Racing, the Porsche Young Professional managed to take out his third-straight WEC win in harsh conditions, which even saw some snow fall throughout the race.
“I’ve never experienced a race like this before. Sun, rain and snow made it extremely difficult in terms of strategy,” Campbell said.
“The team did a particularly great job in the tricky tyre choice. And my two teammates Chris and Riccardo drove an almost flawless race. As was the often the case this season, that was the key to success.”
The victory now sees both Campbell and Reid move into fourth in the LMGTE-Am drivers standings and Porsche take an unassailable lead to claim the title with a round to spare.
