Wakefield Park will celebrate its 25th anniversary this weekend when the CAMS New South Wales Motor Race Championship embarks on its third round of the season.

 

Over the years, the track has allowed the state championship to conduct a number of meetings each year, helping with the development and growth of many drivers today.

 

Drivers that have raced at Wakefield Park often have nothing but praise for the Goulburn based circuit, most of which will be part of this weekend’s celebrations.

 

However, of all the competitors there this weekend,  there are a select few who have a strong connection to Wakefield, including Formula Ford competitor Jeff Senior, who was present when the track first opened in 1994.

 

“Some years prior to the opening of Wakefield, I was lucky enough to be pitted next to co-founder of the track, Paul Samuels, at Amaroo,” Senior said.

“His enthusiasm and great attitude towards racing was infectious. It was no wonder that in 1994 the track he built with John Carter was such a success.

"Wakefield Park was always aimed at grass roots motor sport and whilst it might have gained a few metres in width from the early days, I think it still holds those values today.

“It is a great place to race and test and I have always found Wakefield a very friendly place. I hope it continues for many years to come and I know Paul would be very pleased with its legacy.”

As the years have gone by and different categories have come and gone, this weekend will see more than 120 competitors across nine of the championship’s staple categories hit the track.

 

From Production Touring Cars to Formula Vee, there will be a variety of different racing fans can enjoy, including NSW Sports Sedans, which category president Steven Lacey believes will represent the racing that has occurred at Wakefield over the years.

 

“Wakefield Park calls on a driver’s abilities and not just horsepower to win their division,” Lacey said.

 

“This weekend, like those of the past, will see fierce battles throughout the Sports Sedan divisions of one, two and three, on a track which evens up the large and smaller capacity cars.

 

“This weekend is a fantastic opportunity to thank those past and present that have managed, officiated and volunteered at Wakefield Park for the past 25 years.

 

“They have given the competitors of NSW a professionally run and technical track upon which to race their cars.”

 

With the racing to get underway from 9am, motor sport fans are encouraged to head to Goulburn and help celebrate a track that has long supported the development of circuit racing in New South Wales.

 

Tickets start from $30 and can be bought at the gate, while there will be a special commemoration dinner at the Tattersalls Hotel in Goulburn where everyone is welcome.

 

The CAMS New South Wales Motor Race Championship takes place at Wakefield Park on 25-26 May.
