Virgin Australia Supercars Championship driver Tim Slade will switch the Holden Commodore for a Hyundai Excel this weekend for a special appearance in the Wynn’s Circuit Excel State Championships.
Taking place at The Bend Motorsport Park as part of the CAMS South Australia Motor Race Championships, Slade will replace his dad Gil as one of the 45 drivers entered in the grassroots event.
After watching the series for the first time in Victoria earlier this year when it was a support category in the Truck Assist Winton Supersprint, Slade was highly impressed with what it offered.
“We went out to pit wall and I think there was something crazy like 45 or 50 cars. It’s pretty cool to see that many cars around a race track in Winton,” Slade said.
“Talking to dad after the race, he said ‘come for a skid’, so I worked out with them what race I could do.”
Currently ranked 11th outright in the Championship, with his best race result being third in the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019, Slade is enjoying a solid season at the top level.
Despite also recently celebrating his 150th Supercars race, Slade isn’t planning to dominate the field, with the New South Welshman just happy to racing with his dad on an amateur level.
“It has been a while since I’ve done any racing with dad,” Slade added.
“The last was probably Formula Ford in 2003. It should actually be quite good, I don’t think he’s left any stone unturned.
“I do think it is a really good competitive entry level category.
“The guys at the front of any category are really fast, I would never go into something and expect to win it. It is all about having a bit of fun.”
The Wynn’s Circuit Excel State Championships will have five races across the weekend with two on Saturday and three on Sunday.
The CAMS South Australia Motor Race Championships take place at The Bend Motorsport Park on 29-30 June.
