Morgan Park has hosted the second round of the CAMS Queensland State Circuit Championships with 150 competitors racing across the weekend.
With 12 class categories featuring between four races across eight groups, there was plenty of action for fans to enjoy with a mixture of both tight finishes and round dominations making up the results.
From the first race of the weekend involving Saloon Cars and HQ Holdens to the weekend finale's Racing & Sports Cars and Formula Vee, a lot of good race was had including in the Hyundai Excels, Production and Historic Touring Cars, Sports Sedans and Trans-Ams.
Running the event was the Cord Owners and Gatherers Society and club spokesman Ian Mayberry was thrilled with the outright results of the meeting
“We had a really good turnout throughout all the categories which made it entertaining racing all weekend, as well as no major incidents which is always a good sign,” Mayberry said.
“There was a really good mixture of competitors across all categories, with the Hyundai Excel series having seven drivers making their circuit debuts as well as a good showing in both the Production and Improved Production Touring Cars.
“Also a big thanks to all the volunteer officials who helped make the day run smooth, on time and without incident so we are looking forward to the next one.”
The weekend saw six clean sweeps occur with Cameron Wilson and Beric Lynton claiming the perfect scores for the event’s two biggest categories in the Hyundai X3 series and Production Cars.
HQ Holdens winner Brandon Madden was the first of the six to secure his four race wins, while Christopher Farrell completed his perfect weekend in the last race of the weekend.
While Wayne Hennig in the Production Sports and Nicholas Rangeley in the Geminis were the other drivers to go undefeated in the round, it was the Historic Touring Cars’ final result which held bragging rights for the most dramatic with Matthew Clift holding on to win the round over John Wishart by just one point.
While Clift won the opening three races with ease, a DNF in the final race effectively gave the race winner Wishart every chance to win, however incredibly Clift managed to record a bonus point for the fastest lap, thus sealing the round.
It may not have had the same drama, but the Sports Sedans also came down to the final race with Stephen Rushton’s runner-up pinching the round win over Nicholas Contojohn.
The next round of the Queensland Circuit Racing State Championship will be in September at Morgan Park.
