Hill climb's finest arrive in SA

The 2019 CAMS South Australian Hillclimb Championships will attract a number of talented drivers.

After eight entertaining events in 2019, the South Australian Hill climb season reaches the end of the road this weekend with the CAMS South Australia Hillclimb Championships.

Hosted by the Sporting Car Club of South Australia, more than 100 competitors from both South Australia and around the country head to the Collingrove Hillclimb Track in the scenic Barossa Valley for a weekend of non-stop action.

The event, which is touted as the pinnacle of the South Australian hill climbs, will feature a wide range of categories to cover the eclectic mix of vehicles that will be entered into the hugely popular event.

From road registered vehicles to historic, rally and improved production cars, there will be plenty of cars on display to appease the tastes of motoring enthusiasts of all eras, as well as the powerful Formula Libres, the category best known to dominate the discipline.

Last year saw a national contender take top spot in an entertaining battle between the Libres, as Dean Tighe flexed his muscles and delivered a brilliant performance behind the wheel of his unique purple Marvel super hero donned open wheeler.

With Tighe unavailable for this year's championship, the man to beat comes in the form of Alan Foley and his 1693cc Formula Libre. The Victorian enters the South Australian event with a large amount of confidence having picked up a number of recent solid results in his home state.

While there be a number of drivers gunning for top spot, they will also be attempting to break the elusive lap record of 27.25 seconds set by Brett Hayward in 2014. Despite gallant attempts from Tighe and other open wheel drivers in the previous five years, the record remains untouched – a testament to the quality of Hayward’s ability.

With much on the line at the state event, Sporting Car Club of Australia spokesman Joshua Fraser believed the hill climb could be perfect for a fun family day out.

“With fantastic viewing spots of the track, Collingrove Hillclimb provides the perfect motor sport venue for spectators,” Fraser said.

“With a backdrop of rolling hills, grazing horses and endless greenery, it’s a great spot to bring your family for a picnic and enjoy some great motor sport in the Barossa.

“If a picnic is not your thing, enjoy an egg and bacon roll, pies and pasties and a number of other delicious food and beverage options from the canteen

“Many have tried and many have failed to better that epic effort (Hayward’s record). The big question is, on 19-20 October, will this record be broken and a new king of Collingrove Hillclimb rise from the ashes.”

The gates open on both days at 9am with entry starting at $15 per person and $30 per carload of people.

The 2019 CAMS South Australian Hill Climb Championships takes place at Collingrove Hillclimb track on 19-20 October.
