The Cooma Car Club celebrates its 20th anniversary this year
The New South Wales based Cooma Car Club will take over Mount Gladstone, four kilometres west of Cooma, this weekend as it hosts three individual hill climb events all accommodating to drivers of different levels.
The weekend will kick off with the club’s junior drivers, aged between 14 and 17, participating in a ‘come and try’ style format which will see their runs timed but not recorded.
Once the club’s future complete their runs, the event will take on a historic theme with competitors taking part in the classic hill climb run up Mount Gladstone Road.
The category will see vintage and classic cars aged more than 30 years old go up against each other, as well as offering drivers a chance to prepare for the main event the following day.
The weekend’s final hill climb will be an all-day open event, as a range of 2WD and 4WD production and modified vehicles from all classes compete as part of the impressive entry list.
The talented field will include four cars entered in the over 3000cc Type 3 AWD/Special Vehicle class, meaning the current Mount Gladstone track record set by Reece McIntosh in a Golf R in 2017 is likely to be broken.
With competitors each getting a minimum of four one kilometre runs, publicity officer Ian Hampton believes there will be a lot of drivers in the running this year.
“There is so much to like about the entrants for this year’s hill climbs with a good array of cars from all eras competing,” Hampton said.
“However I would have to say that standout which fans should be keeping an eye on is definitely Ralph Pauperis’s MG TC Milano. It’s a racing classic.”
"After Ralph's restoration, the car was log booked by CAMS in 1984 as a Category 5 historic Australian special LB Sports Racing car, and has raced at many historic race meetings around Australia.
“We’re expecting a fantastic turnout across all three hill climbs and we’re really looking forward to Saturday’s 'come and try' event.”
“The hill climb will enable the participants to develop their skills, by learning and experiencing car control in a safe controlled environment with an instructor.”
The hill climbs will run from 9:30am to around 4pm local time on both days with spectators able to attend the event through a free shuttle bus which will be running all day.
