The new Trans Am Series will start national life with a bang as up to 19 entries have been confirmed to contest the category’s inaugural first round at the Superloop Adelaide 500.
The category will enjoy a six-round season on a national level, including rounds with the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships, after growing in popularity over recent years.
With its first ever official round to double as a support category to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship opener, the American muscle car category has already attracted a number of a domestic Trans Am racing stars for 2020.
Headlining the strong field will be Ford Mustang driver Aaron Seton, Chevrolet Camaro star George Miedecke and the three-car Dream Racing Australia team made up of Nathan Herne, Craig Dontas and Craig Scutella.
While the regular big names from the category’s impressive talent pool are locked in, there will also be fair few debutants making their transition into the popular category, the most notable being former SuperUtes and Toyota 86 regular Cameron Crick.
Joining Crick as a Trans Am debutant will be Brett Holdsworth in a Chevrolet Camaro and former Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge round winner Jimmy Vernon, who will be behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang.
As the highly anticipated series opener approaches and the final entry list begins to take shape, Miedecke was looking forward to the big challenge offered from the drivers of all backgrounds.
“There’s a lot of good drivers in the pack, so I’d expect this to be the most competitive race for these cars that we’ve ever seen,” Miedecke said.
“The Trans Am cars are wild. They spit flames, they’ll be jumping kerbs. I’m expecting them to be a handful.
“The mid-corner speed is quite high, though, so combine that with Turn 8, no ABS, no traction control – just a 6.2 litre V8 monster on a real driver’s circuit. it will be a serious test for those on the grid.”
More than 250,000 fans are expected to flock the Supercars’ season opener, adding extra excitement to the Trans Am Series’ historic first round, which will feature three races as part of the weekend.
The Superloop Adelaide 500 takes place around the streets of Adelaide on 20-23 February.
