New look Targa Florio back in 2020

Friday 28 February, 2020
When competitors line up for the 2020 edition of the Targa Florio Australian Tribute later this year, there will be much to look forward to in the unique tarmac rally.

Based off the much-loved Sicilian event, which has been running since 1906, the Australian version takes place in Victoria and goes a long way in paying tribute to its Italian counterpart, whilst keeping the traditional aspects of the event alive and adding to the authentic experience.

Over the course of four days in November, the European style event will see an eclectic mix of beautiful classic cars spread across three categories compete through a range of picturesque Victorian towns.

From Flinders, Healesville, Korumburra, Cowes, Mirboo North and Woodend, all the way through the lively Ciao Yarra Valley Ciao Festa in Healesville, the event will see competitors compete in a whopping 75 closed-road stages made up of beautiful roads and cheering crowds.

And keeping up with its traditional flavour, the event will finish right in the heart of Melbourne as crews cross the finish line in the city’s own little Italy, the famous Lygon Street in Carlton, in front of a sea of people.

Ahead of the 2020 edition of the popular event, Targa Florio’s Andrew Lawson was excited for what was in store for competitors and spectators.

“Targa Florio Australia is delighted to be working with Motorsport Australia. The partnership will ensure the event continues to grow into a significant event on the motorsport calendar,” Lawson said.

“The Targa Florio Australian Tribute is an excellent opportunity for competitors to enjoy one of the world’s premium classic car experiences that combines driving experiences with quality, culture and the enjoyment of life.

“The Australian Targa Florio has established the unique and traditional elements of Targa Florio in Sicily highlighting its style, culture and spectacle.”

With Targa Florio to have a display during next month’s Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, as well as a number of smaller events in the lead up to the main event in November, Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca was also thrilled for what was to come.

“Targa Florio Australian Tribute is a wonderful and well executed event that is perfect for passionate lovers of motorsport,” Arocca said.

“This year’s event is also quite important as it will be running through a number of a bushfire affected regions and we believe it will help boost the economy of many of these local towns.

“I know that Andrew and the team will do a great job in putting on a fantastic show once again and I encourage all Motorsport Australia members and partners to support the event.”

The 2020 Targa Florio Australian Tribute takes place in Victoria on 26-29 November.
