Wanneroo Raceway has welcomed back motorsport in style, with up to 38 drivers taking part in the first Infinite Time Attack since March.
The vast array of different cars and competitors were given multiple sessions of up to one hour to post their best time on the West Australian track, and it was Heuson Bak who eventually posted the fastest time.
Behind the wheel of his new Lotus, Bak had 23 laps around the track with his best time of 54.7098 seconds coming on his 17th lap – Bak taking just one more lap than Damian Heaton to secure the fastest time.
Heaton had steered his Mitsubishi Evo X to the number one spot on his 16th timed run, but fell short to Bak by the smallest of margins of under six hundredths.
Less than one tenth behind Heaton in third place was Bryce Moore, as the BMW M3 driver beat the Justin Lee driven Evo X for a top three spot on his final lap.
Remarkably the top five drivers finished within one second of each other as Michael Brandt rounded out the top five in a Mazda RX-7 with a lap time of 55.6765 seconds.
With the event being split into multiple groups across the evening and each individual driver contained to their garage as a way to stay within the Motorsport Australia Return to Race strategy, Bak was just excited to get racing again – his win coming as a bonus.
“It was great to be back. I think everyone couldn’t wait to race again. It’s been a long while since we last managed to race,” Bak said.
“This was the first time I had driven the car. I only got it last month and it’s the first time I had driven it. I didn’t go to hard and I feel there is opportunity to improve my times, but overall it was a pretty good result for my first ride in the car.
“We seem to be settling into normal life a little bit now and it was good to do the event because it just felt like racing now is a step in the right direction.
“I didn’t know I had won because of all the social distancing and separation procedures in place, so we obviously didn’t have a podium, but I am just happy to be racing again regardless of the result.
“I have a test and tune day on Sunday so I can get more seat time, which is why last night was important.”
