The WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC) returns to action this weekend, holding one of the country’s first state level events with its second race meeting for the year at Wanneroo Raceway.
Taking place on Sunday, more than 130 entries have been confirmed for the club’s grand return to motorsport, with a number of its regular categories to be part of the action.
Included on Sunday’s schedule are Formula Ford, the Excel Cup, Historic Touring Cars, Improved Production, Formula Vee and Saloon Cars, with each category getting qualifying sessions and multiple races across the day.
Working closely alongside Motorsport Australia, the club has done everything it can to adhere to the Return to Race guidelines, which was created as a way to assist clubs in running events in a safe environment in addition to events’ compliance with specific local restrictions.
Part of their plan includes only allowing one competitor and crew member in each garage, as well as no spectators on site. All documentation will be completed electronically.
WASCC Chair of the Competition Peter Dyball was confident the club’s COVID-19 plan would accommodate for the big field.
“We’ve had to work out ways our flag marshals can do their jobs, yet remain in compliance with distancing requirements,” Dyball said.
“In some cases, we’ve been fortunate to have flag teams who are family members, which means they can be inside the same flag position.
“The race meeting starts with the drivers briefing and will be conducted over the track PA system, with drivers standing outside their carports or garages.
“All of these procedures are part of a COVID-19 Safety Plan and Venue Management Plan we’ve prepared for the event.
“The restrictions also mean we can’t conduct trophy ceremonies or have drinks in the clubhouse.”
The WASCC’s June race meeting will take place at Wanneroo Raceway on 21 June from 8:30am local time.
