Wasley wins Townsville khanacross

The Townsville City Autosports Club held its second khanacross for 2020.
The Townsville City Autosports Club has held the second round of its khanacross series with Mitsubishi Evo driver Brett Wasley taking out the round in style.
Around 16 of the club’s members were part of one of the first events in Queensland since Government restrictions were eased, and it seemed there was no skill lost during the extended break.
Behind the wheel of his new car, Wasley enjoyed a tense battle with Sam Woodger and trailed him for much of the first half with Woodger taking out four of the event’s five runs and heading into the midway point with a five second buffer over Wasley.
However Wasley struck back in the second half of the event, picking up four of the next five runs, including a decisive seven-second win in the eighth test, which Woodger was unable to recover from and settled for second place.
The victory for Wasley proved all the sweeter due to it being the first event in a car that he had yet to drive.
“It was a nice feeling because we put a lot of work into getting that new car ready and running over the lockdown period,” Wasley said.
“We were building the car up over that time and when we finally got it finished, we were ready to go racing. I had a four wheel drive car as opposed to everyone else’s rear wheel drive cars, so I had an unfair advantage.
“It was just like riding a bike. It didn’t feel rusty at all. I was a bit nervous to see how I would handle this thing because I had never driven it before. But it felt good after certain runs and I learnt how to do the starts.
“It was nice to get out there and do something again and it was fantastic how everyone was sticking by the new rules. Once we got underway, it was just going through the motions and it felt great to be back.”
Rounding out the top three was John Sutton after the Toyota Celica driver put in a gallant effort and placed second on multiple runs, but was never able to win one of his own.
The Queensland based club will release more information on upcoming events in the coming weeks.
