A good year in F3 is crucial

Australia's four FIA Formula 3 Championship representatives Jack Doohan, Oscar Piastri, Alex Peroni and Calan Williams caught up while in lockdown.

After months of waiting on the sidelines, Calan Williams, Alex Peroni, Jack Doohan and Oscar Piastri will finally get the chance to strut their stuff in the FIA Formula 3 Championship this weekend.

The championship begins its revised season at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, with every round on its calendar forming part of an impressive support bill to the Formula 1 Championship over the next few months.

The FIA Formula 3 Championship was introduced as a way to have a steady pathway for budding drivers to climb up the open wheel ladder, with Formula 4 being the most junior category and Formula 1 being the top level.

With so many drivers around the world vying for seats and hoping to one day achieve their dream of racing at the top level, a good season in the third tier championship is crucial for drivers to continue their development.

It may not be about winning the championship, but certainly producing consistent performances, showing promising signs of talent and grabbing good results will be on the minds of all four Australian drivers.

Last week, the four discussed the challenges of living the lifestyles of a race car driver on motorsport.org.au, and in this week’s edition, they touch on the importance of a good season in Formula 3 and their aims to reach Formula 1.

For Williams, Doohan and Piastri, this weekend will mark their long-awaited debuts in the category’s second official season, while Peroni will have another crack in the championship after having his season cut short last year due to a horror crash at Monza.

In true banter style, the boys figured out why Peroni is spending a second year there.

The Formula 3 group won’t be the only Australians in action this weekend with Daniel Ricciardo contesting in the Formula 1 Championship and 2019 Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup series winner Jordan Love making his debut in the Porsche Mobile1 Supercup.

The Formula 1, 3 and Porsche Mobile1 Supercup track action takes place from 3-5 July at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
