NT officials super weekend
Monday 10 August, 2020
A number of officials have undergone Fire and Rescue training in NT.
The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship teams and drivers might have had an enforced weekend off, but for some of Motorsport Australia’s loyal officials, the postponed event allowed for some important extra training.
Taking place at Northline Speedway, around 26 officials took part in the specialised Fire and Rescue training run by Motorsport Australia’s Training and Operations Executive David Mori, and Women for Wheels’ Robin Smith.
The training saw the officials undergo an extensive theory session before partaking in a number of practical sessions which focused on using fire extinguishers in multiple scenarios and practicing extractions by using a range of specialised cutting equipment to remove the doors and a roof from a vehicle.
While there was a mixture of new and experienced local NT volunteers in attendance, the training also welcomed a number of officials from the South Australian Motor Racing Officials Association who used the day as a chance to up skill.
Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith believed there would be many benefits to come out of the training – especially at grassroots level.
“From all reports, it was a brilliant day and well attended considering it was put together so quickly, so credit must go out to Robin, David and NT Major Events who arranged the venue, extinguishers and vehicle,” Smith said.
“We had a great mixture of officials, including three who have just recently signed up, the training gave them the chance to use rescue tools that they wouldn’t have ever used before.
“They had a lot of fun while learning vital skills, which is what makes these days so great.
“A benefit to Northern Territory motorsport is they have now increased the amount of specialist individuals with some more Fire and Rescue Officials trained up.
“These sessions also mean local events will have more experienced officials on hand, which is so important for grassroots motorsport.”
All 26 attending officials will be in action during this weekend’s BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown at Hidden Valley Raceway.
