Hills District aiming for solid khanacross series

Friday 14 August, 2020
The Hills District Car Club holds its third khanacross round this weekend.
After a successful khanacross in June, the Hills District Car Club will return to its home this weekend for the third round of its khanacross series at Hampton Hills Motorsport Park.

More than 30 club members will take part in the event with organisers hopeful of completing a mammoth 12 tests throughout the day after having already run two events since restrictions were eased in New South Wales.

Due to their experience in the current climate, the club will continue to implement a variety of safety measures to stay within the Motorsport Australia Return to Race document, as they look to keep both their motorkhana and khanacross competitions going strong.

Club Secretary Russell Lewis was hopeful they could accumulate a good number of rounds by the end of the year if they continue to run the way have.

“We’re really excited for the khanacross this weekend, especially since it will be our third for the year. Add another two in the remaining months and we can have a decent series,” Lewis said.

“Our motorkhana series is going strong too. We had 50 people turn up to the one we did last month, so the competition aspect of the club is going well right now. Hopefully by the end of the year, we will have completed 10 events which under the current climate, is brilliant.

“I think our attitudes towards the situation is what is making it work. Everyone is doing their part to make sure we abide by the regulations that have been put in place. As appointed COVID checker for the events, I am making sure we run a tight ship.

“We’re taking it seriously because it takes only one blunder and force us back to square one again. We have good signage and hand sanitiser at all checkpoints, we’re supplying facemasks to all attendees and we have personal safety equipment and medical supplies all on hand.

“Anyone who is wanting to come up must register for the event. Under COVID-19, no one can set foot on our property without registering. It’s important to maintain these rules.”

While Lewis has been doing a stellar job in keeping the club on top of COVID-19 requirements, it’s been the Browns who have performing at the top of their game on track.

With both drivers back this weekend, along with host of the other contenders, the event will be even more important due to the high number of juniors confirmed to participate.

“We have 12 junior drivers which is fantastic as junior development a big focus of ours,” Lewis added.

“We have about 50 juniors on the books and some of them are third generation club members. This weekend we also have four juniors spending time as officials which is great for them.

“It’s great to see a healthy list of competitors with a variety of vehicles entered too. From specials, to road cars and rally cars to even one driver bringing his fully restored Torana from the 1970s, there is a lot diversity, which is what makes these events great.”

The King Reilly Khanacross takes place at Hampton Hills Motorsport Park on Sunday 16 August.
