Tasmanian Circuit Championship hits triple digits for third round

After a positive return to competition at Symmons Plains Raceway last month, the Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship is back this weekend with Baskerville Raceway to host the third round of the 2020 season.

More than 100 competitors across a range of categories will form part of the Hobart Sporting Car Club’s first major event since March, making it one of the Championship’s biggest turnouts in recent times.

With the average number usually hovering around 70 and last month’s round reaching 88, the three digit entry list is a result of hard work from the club and Tasmanian drivers eager to return to race.

As usual, there will be a host of the Championship’s regular categories in action with Holden HQs, Formula Vee, Historic Touring Car, Sports GT, Racing and Sports Cars, Hyundai Excels and the Regularity to all enjoy four sessions each.

While the Hyundai Excels usually attract the largest grids at most state circuit rounds around the country, the Regularity boasts the biggest field this weekend with around 25 entries to take part in the event, most of whom are using the round to get valuable seat time in their new cars.

Despite this weekend’s larger entry list, the club is unable to house spectators for the state round due to Government restrictions, however Event Secretary Tony Hudson was confident they would still be able to reach fans online.

“This weekend is looking good because we have 101 entries and these competitors have been starved of motorsport this year so we’re happy to be running,” Hudson said.

“A lot of those competitors will be fresh from last month’s round at Symmons Plains too and they are coming from all around of the state, which is great.

“Unfortunately we can’t have spectators, but it’s one of those things and we just need to keep going.

“To make sure the general public can have some idea about what is going on, we have organised a live stream to take place, which will start on Sunday morning.

“Like a lot of other clubs, we have had to restrict some areas for this weekend and one of those has been reducing pit crews to just two people, so some teams have found it difficult.

“Unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do, but the majority of the competitors have been really sympathetic towards everything and have been trying to help us where they can.”

Sixty-eight drivers will take part in Saturday’s practice day before the action gets away on Sunday morning, which fans can view live via the Championship’s Facebook page.
