Joint effort to get Geelong autocross up

For just the second time this year, the Geelong Motorsport Club and Western District Car Club will co-host an autocross with 25 of their members to take part in the event.

It’s been more than seven months since the clubs held an event as part of their joint Autocross/Khanacross series and while no outright title will be given in 2020, they are still hopeful of running multiple standalone events.

Taking place at the Geelong Motorsports Complex in Avalon on Sunday, the 25 local competitors will be taking on eight different tests, with their times on the gravel layouts combining to an outright score.

As a result of it being either club’s first event in the current climate, event secretary Martin Prins was excited for the weekend and believed it was highly important to get some motorsport happening.

“The club, officials and competitors are all really looking forward to the autocross, but I  just hope the weather holds up,” Prins said.

“We reached capacity pretty much straight away and we restricted it to 25 deliberately because of the regulations which we are still coming to grips with. So technically we have a full field and we have a few reserves too.

“We kept it smaller because all the new regulations have made it a bit difficult, in terms of social distancing, so having less people means we should be okay. We have been getting assistant signs printed and making sure the facilities are cleaned before and after the event.

“To give a lot of people an opportunity to get some racing in this year is important. A lot of our members have been hanging out for this weekend because they just want to do some motorsport.

“Running this weekend has also been vital because it means we continue to raise the profile of motorsport around these areas. We want people to know we are still here and still alive and I think that’s why it’s special we’re running.”

The Geelong Motorsport Club and Western District Car Club’s second autocross for 2020 takes place at Geelong Motorsports Complex in Avalon on Sunday 18 October from 9am AEDT.
