The Motorsport Australia Queensland State Circuit Championships reaches its final round this weekend with the Cord Owners and Gatherers Society having the honours of hosting the two day meeting.
Taking place at Morgan Park, more than 160 competitors across 14 categories will feature in the round, which will be made up of nine different fields – all of whom will be getting four races each.
From Racing Cars and Formula Fords to HQs, Geminis and Saloon Cars, there will be quite a few competitors amongst many of the categories looking to claim not just round honours, but their respective titles too.
Categories headlining the weekend include the Improved Production Cars Association, which has two 30-minute races on both days, and the Hyundai Excels, who unsurprisingly boasts the event’s largest field of 35 drivers– including one of the weekend’s most notable names in Triple Eight Engineering Team Principal Roland Dane.
With the club running just its third state championship round ever and its first official racing meeting under the current COVID-19 restrictions, club President Ian Mayberry was looking forward for what the weekend would bring.
“Everything is really flying at the moment. We usually get around 160 entries, but we were a little surprised we got that much as we thought there would be a number of people who affected financially by the tough year,” Mayberry said.
“However it was much better than we expected as it seems people are really keen to race. It’s also amazing how many of our officials are itching to get out there and make the meeting happen.
“Our secretary is Mark Stockwell did the HRCC Historic meeting under the current COVID requirements, so he was across all the processes needed to get it going, which has made it much easier for us to do the meeting instead of starting from nothing.
“Another exciting note about the event is that we have a new commentator in Ryan Jones who will be calling his first official race meeting. He was highly recommended by Greg Rust so we’re excited to have him.”
With private practice open to competitors on Friday, qualifying will run on Saturday morning, before the first set of races occur at lunch time. All races are expected to be completed by late Sunday afternoon.
As a result of Queensland restrictions, there will be no trophy presentations following the event, however the club has been chosen to run a delayed awards night in January.
The Motorsport Australia Queensland State Circuit Championships season finale takes place at Morgan Park on 21-22 November.
