Phillip Island ready for magic

After a more than successful return to racing earlier this month, the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC) will host the 30th edition of the ever popular Island of Magic this weekend.

Taking place at the club’s home base, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, the event will once again showcase the best of Victoria’s grassroots categories as it has done for so many years.

From the usual regulars on the Victorian circuit scene such as Improved Production Cars, Formula Vees, Porsche 944s and Sports Cars to the headline acts such as the CUE Victorian Tourist Trophy and Ramada Resort 50K Plate Sports Sedans, there is no doubt it will be a very busy schedule for all in attendance,

While the Sports Sedans and Formula Vees will enjoy healthy fields of 19 entries each, it’s the Victorian Superkarts Club who boasts the event’s biggest field in the event with their series finale welcoming 35 competitors.

Another notable category to look out for is the CUE Victorian Tourist Trophy, which will see 16 exotic cars do battle over two one-hour endurance races as opposed to two sprints and one longer race. Some of the iconic brands to feature in the two races include Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren.

In what is a major boost for the event, Victoria’s recent easing of restrictions has allowed PIARC to increase the competitor capacity, allowing for a number of categories to have additional entries.

With the club also successfully adhering to its COVID safe plan using the Motorsport Australia Return to Race document at the Access 2020, PIARC Club President Warren Reid was more than excited for this weekend.

“The ever moving target that the coronavirus pandemic has presented us with this year has definitely created new challenges for our organisation, but we are incredibly excited to be able to celebrate this milestone as a club,” Reid said.

“With recent announcements, and much investigation on behalf of PIARC, Motorsport Australia and the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, we have been able to allow access to this event for more crews than originally anticipated and look forward to seeing all the competitors gridding up this weekend

“Limited entry spots are now available in all categories so if you are interested in being a part of the event I encourage you to give us a call and lock in your place as we don’t expect the places to remain vacant for long.

“Following on from the successful return to racing at the Access 2020 Races and Sprints at the start of November we are confident in our preparation of this event which is being held in line with Motorsport Australia’s Return to Race strategy.”

While the club has allowed for more competitors, motorsport fans hoping to catch some form of live racing this year will have to wait longer with the event not allowing for spectator entry.

The Island Magic takes place at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on 28-29 November.
