Huntley Hillclimb return long time in the making

The Wollongong Sporting Car Club will finally host its first hill climb in more than a year this weekend, when it runs the Huntley Multiclub Hillclimb on Sunday.

It’s been a long time coming for the club, who will host up to 50 competitors at one of the most challenging and oldest hill climb courses in Australia.

While the course’s length of 700m is nothing out of the ordinary, the climb from start to finish is extremely challenging due to the harsh incline competitors are faced with throughout the full distance.

This weekend will not only mark the club’s first hill climb  in more than a year, but one of its first under the new COVID-normal, in line with Motorsport Australia and local government requirements.

With the club locked in to host a round of the Motorsport Australia New South Wales Hill Climb in Championship in April, Event Secretary Mike Arts was looking forward to the next month of motorsport.

“This event is virtually the first hill climb we have run over a year. It is our experiential run to see if we are capable of running it under all the new COVID-19 rules and regularity,” Arts said.

“We will try to limit the entry list to 50 people in total and right now, we are probably sitting in the late 30s, but we are hoping for more and because of the circumstances, we will allow people to enter on the day, which is something we don’t do usually.

“We are really excited about it. We always enjoy running events, no matter the size of them.

“With that said, it’s so far so good on our end. It is a bit stressful trying to organise everything, but we are all looking forward to it and even more so, our round of the New South Wales Hill Climb Championship.”

Competitors will get between eight to 10 runs of the course with the potential to go up to 14, pending on the amount that people that enter.

The Huntley Multiclub Hillclimb takes place at the iconic Huntley Hillclimb in New South Wales on 28 February.
