Entries for the next year’s milestone Targa Tasmania are now open as the event celebrates its 30th anniversary with a new format change and time slot.

For the first time in its long history, the 2022 event will run in March as opposed to its traditional slot of April or May, while the landmark tarmac rally will now take place between a Tuesday and Sunday instead of the usual Monday to Saturday schedule.

In addition to the format change, crews will also get to enjoy more competitive kilometres in 2022 with the course to include 700 competitive kilometres on top of the 2200km of travelling distance around the apple isle.

To celebrate its 30th birthday, the headline round of the Motorsport Australia Targa Championship will return to a number of key routes and iconic stages from over the years – starting from the same location as the first event in 1992 – the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Launceston.

With the event expected to attract more than 400 entries across the many different categories and tours, TARGA chief executive Mark Perry was excited for the milestone and believed the event is just as important for the community as it is for the crews.

“At that official start back in 1992, no one would have thought TARGA Tasmania would still be around 30 years later in the 21st Century. It promises something very special for all those involved and the people of Tasmania,” Perry said.

“The 10th and 20th anniversary events both broke all records with more than 300 cars competing, making TARGA Tasmania the largest tarmac rally in the world.

“It has been a tumultuous ten years since the 20th anniversary event, culminating in the first ever cancellation last year right at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Time has shown it was the right call to make and the launching of our 30th anniversary event today gives everyone great hope of an exciting future ahead for not only TARGA, but the many thousands of events trying to survive through these difficult times.

“It is very important to our communities and our culture to have events happening and whilst we all took them for granted before the pandemic, the amount of interest in TARGA Tasmania right now is unprecedented and hence we are opening entries to our keystone event.

“It promises to be hugely successful for all of the communities we visit, with many returning competitors from the early years; and whilst it is too early to say if our international guests can join us in 2022, we remain hopeful that given the profile of TARGA overseas they too can come and join in on the celebrations."

The 30th edition of Targa Tasmania takes place on 8-13 March, 2022, while this year’s Targa Tasmania closes out the 2020/2021 Motorsport Australia Targa Championship season on 19-24 April.
