The Bendigo Car Club’s khanacross series has reached the business end, as it hosts the penultimate khanacross of its eight-round 2020/2021 season this weekend.
Scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon and evening, the club has already confirmed 20 entrants, with more expected to attend. Between four and six tests will be run in the afternoon, and another four to six tests in the evening session.
Three of the 20 drivers competing will be making their official competition debut this weekend, having only recently obtained their licences and one those new recruits enters the event as a recent graduate of Motorsport Australia’s Ricciardo’s Racers program.
With the club having a heavy focus on a junior and rookie development program, around a quarter of the field will be junior drivers, some of which have the option of taking part in a motorkhana that occurs around the same time.
At the opposite end of the scale, the highly experienced Brendan Paynting is on track for the series trophy having won all but one round this season – and victory this weekend would all but seal the title.
Event Clerk of Course Craig Button was excited for the event and was pleased that the club could continue its 2021 season, amongst all the difficulties in the past 18 months.
“Luckily for us, our seasons go by the financial year so we have effectively been able to run a normal season post-Victoria’s lockdown,” Button said.,
“I feel that motorsport as a whole is coming back to some sort of normality, which is a really great feeling – especially when it comes to seeing our members getting out and having a good time again.
“It’s also nice to have three new competitors and a number of juniors in the whole competition. We own four cars that we use as a way to help the juniors get initial experience behind the wheel, which is something we think is really important.
“We have a couple of females competing too so it makes for quite a diverse field, which is always a good thing for us.
“These khanacross and motorkhana events are our main staples each month – every now again we host state events, but this is our bread and butter and we love doing it.
“It’s open and free for spectators and we have QR codes on site to stay in line in COVID-19 requirements. We always get a few people come through and watch and more often than not, people will come watch one month, and join up to compete the following month – which is fantastic.”
Entries for the event will remain open until 1pm on Saturday with interested participants able to enter right up until the event commencement.
The Bendigo Car Club’s Twilight Khanacross and Motorkhana takes place at Bagshot Motorsports Complex on Saturday 8 May.
