The WA Sporting Car Club (WASSC) remains confident it will run its July meeting despite uncertainty surrounding Western Australia’s lockdown restrictions.

While the state is towards the end of its current “circuit breaker” lockdown, the club has continued with its plan to host the July meeting at Wanneroo Raceway.

More than 100 entries have been confirmed with 122 different drivers across the seven categories locked in to take part in the event.

The round’s headline act will be the Excel Cup Enduro, which will see 22 cars contest two heats before an endurance feature race, where they will complete around 100 kilometres over 40 laps.

Other categories on the bill include Formula Ford, Formula Vee, Holden HQs, the club’s Tarmac Sports Time Challenge Regularity and Street Cars - competitors in the latter will fight it out for the perpetual Torque trophy throughout the day.

The club’s Motorsport Events Manager in Marc Roissetter believes there has been no major impact on its entry numbers and that the club still intends to run the event.

“At the moment, we are looking forward to running the event and unless there is a decision from Mark McGowan to extend the lockdown, we are still charging ahead,” Roissetter said.

“Our officials, competitors and administrators are all on hold at the moment, but if the lockdown does end up being extended, then we will do what we did with another event earlier this year and postpone it until a later date.

“We have been working hard alongside the stewards and Motorsport Australia to make sure we are in a position where we can run the event and we have a variety of strategies and regulations in place ready for implementation should we need to.

“Having the flexibility that we have and making a number of decisions on the fly has been key to making our events over the past 18 months work. Our numbers are around the same as they have been all year so from that point of view, we are doing well.

“I would like to thank our volunteer officials though because they have been extremely flexible and patient with us as we work towards trying to adapt to the current circumstances.”

The WA Sporting Car Club’s July meeting takes place at Wanneroo Raceway on Sunday 4 July.
