Australian James Allen played a major role in helping Panis Racing Team win the 4 Hours of Monza.
West Australian James Allen has scored a triumphant victory in the European Le Mans Series, helping French outfit Panis Racing team to its first ever round win in the series.
Driving alongside Frenchman Julien Canal and William Stevens of Great Britain, the trio steered the Panis Racing Oreca 07 to a comfortable 4 Hours of Monza win, beating 49 other cars in the process.
Although they had a slow start to the weekend on the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the team managed to click into gear by qualifying, where they secured an impressive P8 for the race.
Canal took on the responsibility of starting the race and the team could not have had a better start, taking advantage of a safety car period with a quick pit stop, which allowed the Frenchman to power through to second place once back on track.
Allen then spent the middle section of the race behind the wheel and the 25-year-old delivered, holding off all challengers behind him and showing strong pace to claim the lead.
Once again, the team's strategy to pit right before another full course yellow flag paid dividends, allowing Stevens as the final driver to extend the gap and bring the car home.
Following the team’s historic victory at Monza, Allen will rejoin them for the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans next month.
“I feel quite good about going to Le Mans this year,” Allen said.
“The field will be extremely competitive but that was the case last year too and Panis managed to finish 3rd in LMP2 last year so I’m confident in the ability of the team.
“Of-course Le Mans itself is very demanding on the team, the drivers and the car but with the experience of everyone involved in the team I believe we can end Sunday afternoon with a good result.”
The 24 Hour of Le Mans takes place at the Circuit de la Sarthe on 21-22 August.
