Doohan moves to second in F3 championship

Monday 02 August, 2021
Jack Doohan is now second on the FIA Formula 3 Championship standings.

FIA Formula 3

Jack Doohan has jumped into second place on the outright FIA Formula 3 Championship standings after yet another solid weekend behind the wheel.

With the Championship in Hungary running as a support category to Formula 1, Doohan once again showcased his pace with a P3 in qualifying.

In the opening reverse grid race, Doohan was demoted to P10 but managed to make up one position on a track that is difficult for overtaking.

A promising result in race two was on the cards as Doohan was elevated to the second row in another reverse grid, however the Queenslander had a finish to forget as he reached the chequered flag in P13.

Not to be deterred, Doohan didn’t make the same mistake when it came to the feature race, converting the P3 start to his fourth podium of the year.

The other Australian competing in the championship, Calan Williams, was unable to keep how own momentum running after a decent points finish in Austria.

It was a tough weekend all-round for the West Australian as he placed in the latter half of the grid in all three races – races one and three in P17 and P24 in race two.

The FIA Formula 3 Championship returns later this month for the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 28-29 August.

W Series

Caitlin Wood’s long awaited return to the W Series has ended in heartbreak with the New South Wales born driver finishing the Hungarian round in P17.

Although she showed positive signs in practice with the eighth fastest lap time, Wood’s weekend took a turn for the worse as her car had mechanical issues during qualifying, which saw her end the session in P17.

Once it came to the race, plenty of lap one drama made it difficult for Wood to make up any places and she ultimately finished where she started.

The next round of the W Series will be the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 28-29 August, however it’s unclear as to whether Wood will race.

Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup

The Total 24 Hours of Spa resulted in two contrasting narratives for both Matt Campbell and Jordan Love with the latter enjoying the happier ending.

Driving in the SPS Automotive Performance prepared Mercedes-AMG GT3 alongside Yannick Mettler and Miklas Born from Switzerland and German Lance David Arnold, Love finished the race in P21 and P5 in the Silver class.

It was an impressive showing from the four drivers as they started the iconic race just inside the top 30 and made up plenty of places throughout their 547 laps.

The team eventually finished eight laps behind the outright winners Come Ledogar, Nicklas Nielsen, Alessandro Pier Guidi and four behind Silver Class winners Ezequiel Perez Companc, Ricardo Sanchez, Patrick Kujala, Rik Breukers.

Campbell on the other hand had the complete opposite experience to his younger compatriot, with his team qualifying in a well-placed P8 outright but retiring after just 12 hours.

The Porsche works driver was driving alongside full-time teammates Earl Bamber and Mathieu Jaminet in the Porsche 911 GT3-R and had a solid start to the race – moving to sixth place after just one hour.

The trio then slowly dropped down the field as each hour went by before a huge 10th hour saw them surge back up to eighth place. That’s as good as it got for them though as mechanical issues saw them drop down to outside the top 40.

The GPX Racing Porsche was then retired after 244 laps when the issues were unable to be rectified.

The next round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup is the 6 Hours of Nürburgring on 3-5 September.

British F4 Championship

Marcos Flack has had another mixed round in the British Formula 4 Championship at Oulton Park.

Flack had a decent start to the fourth round of the season, picking up some valuable points with a P8 finish, before continuing his solid run of form for the weekend with a P7 in race two.

The Victorian was then disqualified post-race after spinning David Morales but the penalty was later rescinded and he was given a five-place grid drop penalty for the final race.

The penalty made it difficult for Flack to be able to get a good result in the race as the 15-year-old rounded out the finishers in P17.

The British Formula 3 Championship continues later this month at Knockhill Racing Circuit on 14-15 August.
