Jack Doohan has it all to do in the FIA Formula 3 Championship's final round later this month.

A tough round in Zandvoort for Jack Doohan has left the Queenslander’s championship hopes hanging by a thread with one round to go.

Having entered the penultimate round of the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship season in second place and just 25 points off series leader Dennis Hauger, Doohan needed a big weekend to push his title credentials.

The 18-year-old started well by qualifying fourth fastest, however Hauger’s pole position meant the gap was pushed to 29 points ahead of the two reverse-grid races.

Doohan ended up finishing the opening race in sixth place ahead of the Norwegian before a chaotic finale to race two saw both title contenders finish out of the points.

On the penultimate lap of the race, Hauger was fourth to Doohan in eighth but Hauger suffered a puncture to drop to the back of the field. The Australian was unable to capitalise on the situation though, going wide on the final lap and falling to 17th himself.

In Sunday’s feature race, a lights to flag victory for Hauger and a fourth place to Doohan pushed the gap between the two out to 43 points.

With a maximum of 63 points on offer during the final round in Sochi later this month, Hauger simply requires a top 20 finish in order to claim the title.

The other Australian contesting the Formula 3 Championship was Calan Williams, who also had a challenging weekend behind the wheel.

A difficult qualifying result of P20 presented Williams with a big challenge for the weekend, but the West Australian delivered a strong performance in race one to make up four positions and finish P16.

The 21-year-old had a tough race two, finishing in P22 before bouncing back in the feature race to make up two places and finish P18 overall.

The FIA Formula 3 Championship’s final round of the season will be at the Sochi Autodrom in Russia on 25-26 September.

Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe

Matt Campbell and Jordan Love have each had challenging weekends of their own in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup with the latter’s results the better of the two in the Nürburgring Endurance event.

Taking place at the famous German circuit, Campbell entered the round full of confidence alongside regular teammates Earl Bamber of New Zealand and Frenchman Mathieu Jaminet, while Love and his SPS automotive performance teammates in Yannick Mettler and Miklas Born were looking to continue their recent decent run of form.

Campbell and his team got the better start with the GPX Martini Racing Porsche 911 GT3-R qualifying on the second row in P3, while Love and his team could only steer their Mercedes-AMG GT3 to 25th outright and P11 in the Silver Cup.

When it came to the three-hour race, the GPX Martini Racing Porsche had a solid start with Bamber guiding the car to first place at times, with Campbell eventually jumping in the car after an hour in fifth place.

A decent stint from the Queenslander saw him give the car to Jaminet in fifth place and while the Frenchman was solid throughout his run, a mistake with just 25 minutes to go saw him off track and out of the race after 75 laps.

Love had a bit more fortune than his Australian compatriot, finishing the race seven places higher than the team’s starting spot.

At the halfway mark, Love’s team had moved up two places on the outright standings and eighth in class, before moving up to seventh in class and 21st by the end of the middle stint of the race.

The Mercedes then had its biggest run in the final half hour, moving up three outright places to finish the race in 18th outright and seventh in class.

The next round of the Endurance Cup is the season finale of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe with Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to host the round on 8-10 October.
