Doohan ends 2021 season on high

Jack Doohan won the feature race in FIA Formula 3 season finale.
Jack Doohan has finished the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship in a stellar second place after winning the final race of the season.
Doohan's success in the Championship follows fellow Australian Oscar Piastri's Formula 3 Championship crown in 2020, highlighting the depth of talent among the next generation of open-wheel stars.
For Doohan, the Queenslander went into this weekend's final round at Sochi trailing championship leader Dennis Hauger by just 43 points and needing some fortunate results to have any chance of winning the title.
Doohan got off the perfect start to the round, claiming the second fastest time in qualifying before being promoted to pole post session, while Hauger posted a time lower in the top 10.
Unfortunately a tough outing in the weekend’s opening reverse race saw the Doohan drop down the order to score no points, whereas Hauger finished second and sealed the 2021 championship.
With the round’s second race cancelled due to poor weather, Doohan had to wait until the final race to get a chance at some redemption.
Starting from pole, the 18-year-old showed plenty of maturity throughout the race to lead Frederik Vesti and Trident teammate Clement Novalak to the chequered flag and pick up his fourth win of the season.
As a result of Doohan’s win and Novalak's third place, Trident secured its first ever team’s title in the championship, something Doohan was happy to help achieve.
“I just won the final race of the year here in Sochi. I am sad that it's over, but I’m happy to end on a win and to reward the team with the Teams’ Championship, their first ever," Doohan said.
“I’m happy, but we need to keep working. We didn’t win the Drivers’ title and I’m still disappointed with that. We will work hard and next year try and go one better.”
With Hauger finishing all the way back in P24 and Doohan scoring a large haul of points, just 36 points separated the two title rivals at the conclusion of the season.
Doohan’s Australian compatriot Calan Williams also had a significantly better feature race compared to Friday's opening race where he finished P19.
The West Australian had a major improvement as he finished the final race of the season in 12th place and just outside the points.
Later on Sunday, Oscar Piastri extended his lead in the Formula 2 Championship after a big win.
