Motorsport to return to New South Wales

Friday 15 October, 2021
The Impreza WRX Club of NSW is one of three New South Wales based clubs to be holding an event this weekend.
With New South Wales having recently eased its lockdown restrictions, motorsport will finally return to the state this weekend.

To mark the return of the sport in the state, three clubs will be running events on Sunday, including the Tamworth Sporting Car Club, New England Sporting Car Club and the Impreza WRX Club of NSW.

While the Tamworth Sporting Car Club will run a speed event through the form of its Club Lap Dash, both the New England Sporting Car Club and the Impreza WRX Club of NSW are running motorkhanas.

The Impreza WRX club will be running its fourth motorkhana for the year, with a reduced 20-car field to battle it out over eight tests on the Sydney Motorsport Park skid pan.

The motorkhana was originally supposed to a run as a round of the club's series, however with the club running out of time to complete all five rounds, it means this weekend’s event will run purely as an exhibition round to allow members the chance to compete.

And although the club was initially disappointed with being unable to complete its 2021 motorkhana season, Non-Speed Motorsport Manager Michael Walker was taking plenty of positives out of the problem.

“We’re very excited that we get to run this weekend,” Walker said.

“To be honest, we took a massive gamble when we initially applied for a permit as there was no certainty for when New South Wales would open up.

“I essentially did the mathematical equations myself and hoped for the best, and luckily for us, it was a decision that paid off.

“There are a few benefits to not running as a series round, including the variety of cars to have entered and the fact that we can actually run an event without the pressure of being competitive.

“People will of course try to win, but with everything having been so serious lately, this round is a way for us to celebrate being out of lockdown in a social manner and people can just have a fun day without worrying about the results.

“This is one of my favourite rounds on the calendar due to obstacles and layouts of the tests, and I think this event will be just as good due to the fact that people can relax and finish the year on a lighter note.”

Walker also revealed that although all attendees were required to be double vaccinated due to the State Government’s health advice, there had been no issues in the lead up.

“As expected, anyone wanting to come will have to had both vaccines,” Walker added.

“With this said, everyone who is registered as an official or a competitor has already been double vaxxed, so we haven’t had any problems or negativity.

“We are abiding by whatever the state health rules are, which led to no problems.

“The only arguing that has been going on is the banter between members about the competition, which is a positive.

“At the end of the day, I think people are just really keen to get on with normal life and we’re just relieved that we can finally run an event again, so it should be a fantastic day.”

The Impreza WRX Club of NSW’s motorkhana takes place at Sydney Motorsport Park on 17 October.
