Anton De Pasquale has won a historic first race of the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight after a dominant performance under the lights of Sydney Motorsport Park.
It’s been 104 days between rounds for the Repco Supercars Championship, however the Dick Johnson Racing driver showed no signs of rustiness in the 32-lap race as he converted pole position to a well-deserved victory.
Crossing the line five seconds behind De Pasquale was championship leader Shane van Gisbergen, while Brodie Kostecki rounded out the podium.
Despite not getting close to the leader, it was still a gallant effort from van Gisbergen, who was still in contention for the race win for a majority of the race as the Triple Eight Racing star attempted a late overcut – pitting four laps after De Pasquale.
Unfortunately for the New Zealander, De Pasquale was enjoying a solid run and regained the lead with no issues and comfortably claimed his second race win of the year.
"That was good fun; it's always fun at night," De Pasquale said post-race.
"It was quite a good battle with Will into Turns 1 and 2.
"The cars delivered me an awesome car. It was good to convert this one.
"He was pushing me quite hard in that first one, I was trying to look after my tyres.
"It was a good race."
van Gisbergen wasn’t the only driver to make some big moves with Will Brown having essentially climbed the whole field.
The Erebus Motorsport driver got off to a strong start and made multiple passing attempts for the lead on the opening lap, after producing one of his best ever qualifying performances earlier in the day.
However his hopes of a maiden Supercars victory were dashed when a slow pit stop saw him drop down the field and out of contention.
Not to be deterred despite coming back out at the back, Brown managed to navigate his way up the field to get as high as fifth place, where he formed part of a three-way battle for the podium with Brad Jones Racing’s Nick Percat.
With Percat running third mid-way through the second stint, the Victorian soon found himself under a wealth of pressure from both Kostecki and Brown.
Perfect did well to defend his position as hard as he could against Kostecki, however he was unable to hold off the rookie, who had taken on four new wheels during his pit stop.
Like Kostecki, Brown obtained four fresh wheels in his pit stop, which proved a massive difference factor in his climb up the field – capping off a brilliant day for Erebus Motorsport.
