After what has been a hugely successful 2021 hill climb season, the Sporting Car Club of SA (SCCSA) will wrap up its campaign with their season finale hill climb.
Held at the Collingrove Hillclimb, 105 drivers will contest the event, which will run as a standalone meeting outside of any of the club’s state and multi-club competitions.
The club will also use the hill climb as a come and try day for 20 rookies as it looks to continue growing its already healthy competitor base.
While there will be a plenty of rookie drivers attending, the event will also welcome a number of the state’s most prolific hill climbers, with David Mahon leading the charge and Allan and Derek Foster both looking to finally beat the SA champion.
In addition to the state’s high performers in attendance, the event will also welcome a number of more senior drivers who possess an eclectic mix of impressive vehicles.
Headlining that field is Ian Osbourne and his Dodge special, while there are plenty of classic other cars confirmed to run such as an Alpine Streamliner and MGTC Special.
Created in 2020 as a way to give competitors a chance for one last hill climb without the pressure of a series round, the event has boasted the year’s biggest field for the second consecutive year.
Following what has been a big year for the club and its hill climb, Event Organiser Melissa Rees was pleased with the season ending on a high.
“We haven’t missed a beat in the hill climb season this year and although the numbers have been slightly down from 2019, it’s still been a fantastic season and this is just our way of saying thanks,” Rees said.
“This event we run isn’t too serious and it’s purely created as a fun picnic style meeting designed to celebrate the end of the successful season.
“As it’s the last meeting before Christmas, it also gives people a chance to enjoy one last hurrah until March next year.
“To have 100 people is amazing and we’re thrilled with how interested people are to attend – especially since we weren’t expecting this many due to the Legends of the Lakes Hillclimb running last week.
“This event also gives us as a club an opportunity to try and get more people into the sport through the Come and Try. If we wait until next year, they are a bit iffy, so doing it at the end of the year gives them more motivation to come back next year.
"Finally, a big thank you to our fabulous and loyal team of officials who many have completed all of our events for this year."
In addition to being the final hill climb for the year and a come and try day, the event will also have a special element attached as it celebrates the life of the late Tony Orlando.
Orlando was a regular competitor at Collingrove through his life and after passing away last month, the club and competitors will honour him this weekend with a minute of silence.
The Sporting Car Club of SA’s Collingrove Season Finale takes place at Collingrove Hillclimb on Sunday 7 November.
