The Supercars Championship’s second consecutive round at Sydney Motorsport Park has ended with a chaotic race as Jamie Whincup and Anton De Pasquale both enjoyed race wins.

After a straightforward opening evening of the ARMOR ALL Sydney SuperNight, day two saw two races on opposite ends of the scale with the weather playing a crucial role all day.

Starting with Race 24 on Sunday afternoon, De Pasquale was towards the front of the pack once again, only this time, he converted his pole position and to a well-deserved victory.

Despite a slow start off the line, which gifted Shane van Gisbergen top spot early on, De Pasquale regained the lead a few laps later having been on the faster softer tyres and pushing the gap out to six seconds.

The Supercars Championship leader later reduced the buffer to just one and half seconds having pitted far earlier than De Pasquale, however he couldn’t get any closer to the Dick Johnson Racing star, who charged him to his fourth victory for the year.

Finishing in third place and on the podium for the first time this year was James Courtney after he and Tickford Racing perfectly executed their race strategy, successfully beating Will Davison for the place.

While Sunday afternoon’s race proved enjoyable for fans, it was Sunday night’s historic Race 25 that produced one of the most entertaining outings for the 2021 season.

In an outing that had it all before being eventually cut short due to the severe rainfall making it unsafe to continue, seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup ultimately claimed his second win of the season.

The drama occurred before the race had even began when Chaz Mostert was sent to the back of the grid after being excluded from qualifying due to a technical breach involving his Commodore’s front bar being too wide.

When the race did eventually get under way, Mostert’s Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Bryce Fullwood had a false start before Courtney and Brodie Kostecki had contact with each other and hit the barrier causing the first of two safety car periods.

On the restart, van Gisbergen and De Pasquale were at it again, before the Kiwi ended up going off at turn one and just avoiding a crash into the wall.

The off that saw him drop down to the bottom of the order was only just the beginning of a panful stint for van Gisbergen as he was later handed a pit lane penalty due to a rare botched pit stop from Triple Eight – keeping him last of all the runners.

The 2016 Supercars champion didn’t have to endure much more misery in the race after his penalty as Jake Kostecki ended up in the wall – causing the second safety car period.

MH8_3983With the rain getting heavier and the visibility only getting harder, Motorsport Australia Race Control opted to red flag the session before calling off the race – ultimately giving Whincup the win.

"Car lit up off the start, which was the main thing, and I had clean air," Whincup said post-race.

"It's a bit of a weird one to celebrate, wins don't come very often in this day and age.

"I'm not sure what it was, but my thing just hooked up... because it was dry when we rocked up to the grid, there were a few dry spots.

"So I hit the dry spots, and I took off."

Finishing behind Whincup was De Pasquale, who capped off a brilliant day at the office, while Mostert took out the final podium place after producing a mighty performance that saw him move up 23 places.

The Repco Supercars Championship continues next weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park, with three races to form part of the BP Ultimate Sydney SuperSprint.
