The second day of the BP Ultimate Sydney Supersprint has delivered a fantastic showing, as Will Brown secured his maiden Repco Supercars Championship victory.

The Queenslander produced one of the best performances of his short Supercars’ career during Sunday’s second race, which included a mammoth defensive effort against both Red Bull Ampol Racing drivers.

Having started the race on the second row, the 23-year-old found his way to the front of the field in the final third of the race after a perfect pit stop by the Erebus Motorsport team and some smart driving from Brown.

Leading the field with just 10 laps to go, Brown’s efforts for the win were further assisted when the pole sitter Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen were fighting for second place as the former refused to yield his position to his teammate and the Championship leader.

The duo’s battle for second helped Brown extend his lead out to around three seconds.

Eventually the two Red Bull stars reduced the gap before reaching Brown with just a few laps to go.

With two of the most decorated drivers on the Supercars’ grid charging behind him, Brown defended for his life and managed to hold off the two champions during the dying stages, eventually passing the chequered flag first and securing a memorable victory.

After what had been a rollercoaster two weeks for Brown and the Victorian outfit, the victory was reward for their persistence – leaving the first-year driver over the moon.

"I was sort of shi**ing myself a little bit when they were catching me," Brown said post-race.

"I thought if I could bank them up into each other, they'd dogfight against themselves.

"It's what ended up happening, and their tyres were cooked.

"The best part was getting to do burnouts, that was sick."

Rounding out the top five behind were Brad Jones Racing’s Nick Percat and Todd Hazelwood after the latter produced a mighty race where he made up seven positions throughout the 32-laps.

Earlier in the day, Anton De Pasquale picked up his second win of the weekend, converting his pole position into a dominant six-second win.

Despite being involved in a minor battle with teammate Shell V-Power Racing Team teammate Will Davison, who attempted the undercut during the pit stops, De Pasquale was in a race of his own as he comfortably secured his fifth win of the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup.

EV-10-21-MH7_9791Once again it was the two Red Bull Ampol Racing drivers who made up the minor podium positions after what was another thrilling battle between the duo and another driver in Chaz Mostert.

This time they were successful in their efforts as Whincup passed Mostert with a few laps to go while van Gisbergen pipped the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver on the main straight, crossing the finish line by just eight thousands of a second ahead of Mostert.
