The Geordie Fawcett Memorial Autocross will be taking place in Ballarat this Sunday, with event organisers expecting a healthy 40 drivers to line up. 

Taking place at the Ballarat Light Car Club's (BLCC) Motorsport Complex, competitors will get between four and six runs of the club's 1.4km track as they battle it out for event's fastest time of the day.

Clerk of Course Richard Gay said a car display along with a surprise appearance from the North Pole was planned for Sunday, which he hoped would attract a young crowd.  

“We’ve done this in the past but obviously past few years we haven’t been able to do anything due to COVID-19, so we’re having a barbecue and Santa is going to come," Gay said. 

“This event has been running for more than 30 years, and it’s great to see that we already have all the officials lined up for Sunday, we are also expecting a few kids to turn out. 

“We have 18 at the moment but we are still expecting a few more and around 30-40 drivers would be a really good turnout.

"it’s going to be a fun day where people can come out and have a look at the great cars on display and just have a good time.”

Gay added that the event is personally close to his heart, with the race named after his late friend Geordie Fawcett. 

“Geordie was a great personal friend of mine and it’s great to see this event is still running and the joy and excitement is still there each year as it comes," Gay added.

“It’s also an event you obviously want to win because it’s the fastest time of the day who takes it out. Quite a lot of people will be there and people who attend this event want to win because of what it represents.

“The event really highlights the good drivers as it’s just the quickest time of the day.” 

Gay took out the 2020 Geordie Fawcett Memorial Autocross, however this year will be taking a step back from driving to focus on the organisation of the event.

The Geordie Fawcett Memorial Autocross will take place at the BLCC Motor Sport Complex at Ballarat Airport on 12 December.
