Club Profile: Klub VW Darling Downs

Tuesday 04 January, 2022
The VW Klub Darling Downs was formed in 1996
One of the most recognisable classic cars around are the old school Volkswagen Beetle and of course, there are multiple clubs in Australia dedicated to enthusiasts with these vehicles.

One of those clubs, the Klub VW Darling Downs was formed in 1996 after being inspired by the more traditional club in Toowoomba.

Motorsport caught up with Club President Neil Batterham to discuss the 25-year-old club.

Why was the club formed?
Not being one of the mainstream car types, and a little unusual, the club was formed to share trials, tribulations  and passion of owning a classic VW. An honorary mention is also the more modern designed water cooled models that have a cult following of their own, namely the Golf GTI Mk 1 to 78.

When was the club formed?
There was a VW Beetle Club in Toowoomba in the 1960s. Pretty amazing given the cars were not classic cars but new back then. Klub VW formed back in 1996 with a small group of enthusiastic members, later becoming incorporated.

How many active members does the club currently have?
Membership has steadily climbed to be around 80, mostly families with Dubs.

What will be some of the major events over the next 12 months?
Planning is underway for our annual show, Dubs On the Hill, which takes place on Sunday, 13 March. This event in it's current form has been going since 2015 and attracts people from the greater Brisbane area, Northern NSW and western Queensland. Guest celebrities have included 2017 Bathurst winner Luke Youlden and Mal Leyland from the Leyland Brothers. Mal and brother Mike famously drove their 1975 'Burnt Orange' Kombis all over Australia.

There is also participation in community events like the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers as well as monthly coffee runs.

Does the club have any goals over the next few years and if so, what are they?
The club's ongoing goal is to provide a reliable, stable committee to support members. This includes a sociable and friendly platform for friendship and networking. We also have a healthy number of female drivers in their Punch Buggys.

Are there any standout members of your club?
Yes many, but one in particular, Patricia in her one owner, 1975 Dolphin Blue Beetle. We have never asked because it is rude, but Patricia is well into her 80s and still uses her Bug as a daily driver. Patricia will proudly tell you her Type 1 Beetle has never let her down!

How can people join the club?
Just go to www.klubvw.com and follow the links to the membership form.
