A variety of TCR cars around the world could soon be producing cleaner energy after Worldwide TCR touring car promoter WSC completed initial testing on its new Mild Hybrid Kit project.

Over the past 12 months, WSC has undergone studying, testing and developing the new technology that would not only make the cars more affordable, but also help the category move towards a cleaner sport.

The concept of the system will see additional power to the thermal engine in a range between 20 and 30kWs by recovering energy during the braking and deceleration phases.

With TCR manufacturers having shown strong interest in the plans, further development tests will be completed shortly with the idea of introducing it to selected TCR Series for trials in readiness for the 2023 season, should the system prove to be reliable and have no reduction to performance.

This isn’t the first time TCR has embraced the electric era with ETCR, an international series for fully electric touring cars, debuting last year.

Three of the main TCR manufacturers – Hyundai, Alfa Romeo and Cupra contested five rounds across Europe with Cupra’s Mattias Ekstrom the inaugural winner.
