The city of Albany will celebrate the WA Labour Day long weekend in style next month when it welcomes 100 drivers for the annual Auto One Targa Albany Sprint.

Held over the first Sunday and Monday of March, the event consists of three rallies over the course of the two days with the main Auto One Targa Albany Sprint to be held on the Monday.

The main event will run as a hill climb sprint and will see the 100 competitors get four runs up the challenging, yet picturesque three kilometre course, with the winner to have the fastest accumulated time after the four runs.

In the lead up to Monday's hill climb sprint, there will be two minor events taking place around the city – the Auto One Targa Quaranup Rallysprint and the Quaranup Sprint.

Targa Albany Sprint event director Ross Tapper OAM believed the event attracted a capacity field due to technical and challenging courses and the beautiful scenery to where the event takes place.

“Sunday is a technical course and will favour more experienced drivers, and Monday’s course is good for drivers of all levels, including rookies,” Tapper said.

“Competitors love coming to Albany and it's great for spectators too with stunning views over Frenchman Bay and along Marine Drive.”

In addition to the fierce competition and beautiful views, there will be a variety of cars taking part in the weekend that will stand out to car enthusiasts.

The range of cars to be on show include exotic classics such as a 1973 Holden Kingswood, 1938 Ford Pickup, 1970 Porsche 911 and 1971 Datsun 260Z, to the more current models built by Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota,

Headlining the entry list is former Supercars driver Alex Rullo, who will be behind impressive machinery himself.

Having steered his 2014 Lamborghini Gallardo to the outright event win last year, Rullo was hoping to make it back-to-back wins.

“Last year was awesome, we had a lot of fun, but we also had a few issues and just scraped through,” Rullo said.

“We’ve been working on the car flat out changing the ECU – the computer – over to Motec and we’ve given the car a birthday, a general tidy up, so hopefully this year we’ll have a smoother run.”
