Motorsport marriage perfect for Michael and Felicity

Michael Workman (left) and Felicity Wood (right) have been together for 20 years.
When two people are married, it’s always nice to find mutual interest that keeps each partner entertained for a long time.

For Michael Workman and Felicity Wood, that couldn’t be truer.

Both husband and wife are avid motorsport fans and have fuelled their passion by being volunteer officials for more than a decade together.

It was a decision they made together back in 2009 and it’s been an activity they have done side-by-side ever since.

With both having a fascination in the mechanical aspect of cars, in 2012 the two South Australians joined the Victorian Scrutineering Team and have been members ever since – the duo nominated as the club’s token “Far West Victorians”.

Also members of Southern District Car Club, the duo do every level of motorsport possible, from club events to national categories – Wood currently has the role of the Toyota Gazoo Racing 86 Series Technical Delegate.

At the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix, the duo are highly ranked Formula 1 scrutineers having working their way up the ranks over the years.

“We have been doing Formula 1 for the past six to seven years now and we really enjoy coming every year,” Workman said.

“I like being an official because for me, it’s about giving back to the sport and community that have given us so much joy. I have loved motorsport for so long – ever since I went to the first Clipsal all those years ago.

“We’re both in the F1 pits this year and I specialise in the rear wing of the F1 car – we have a jig that we place on the wing to make sure that it fits and the car is legal.

“I am really looking forward to this weekend and seeing the cars again. To be honest, I have really missed it. We were here in 2020 when it was cancelled so it’s great to get back out there again.”

As for Wood, who was named as the SA Official of the Year in 2012, she has enjoyed a stellar career in the sport since joining with Workman.

With the couple's children also beginning their journey in the sport via the Southern District Car Club, Wood’s pathway was a little different but one she has embraced.

“Our children started with the club and then I got involved in running its junior development program with Motorsport Australia – CAMS as it was then,” Wood said.

“I was then a secretary for the club and helped run events before doing lots of training in a variety of areas, which led to me getting many different licences, including my Silver Scrutineers and F1 Scrutineers Licence.

“Each year I do the Alfa Romeo Sauber garage, which I will be doing again this year and will be assisting with the Girls on Track tour of the garage, a program for which I am a Champion of.

“Michael and I really enjoy coming over from South Australia to the Grand Prix every year. We worked for many years in the national paddock before we were put in the F1 paddock.

“Really, we just love motorsport and doing it together.”
