Old School Cool at Australian Grand Prix

Thursday 07 April, 2022
The Melbourne Old School Cruisers is one of the many clubs on display at the Australian Grand Prix.
Motorsport is driven by the passion from thousands of individuals.

Whether it’s officials and drivers or members of teams or club clubs, there are always dedicated people driving the sport – especially those who join car clubs to spend time with like-minded people.

And that is exactly the mantra of the Melbourne Old School Cruisers.

One of the many clubs to be on display as part of the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix’s Live Fast Festival on the Golf Course– a selection of impressive cars from yesteryear are on show.

Having been formed 10 years ago, the club has remarkably just signed its 5000th member – a highly impressive feat considering it was created purely off the cuff.

Rewind back to 2012, Eric Christopher and a few friends would meet every Friday night and take their kids around for a drive in their old school cars.

Eventually, Johnson decided he would expand his group of enthusiasts and make it a club in the hopes that a few extra people would join.

Never could he have imagined it would grow to the size that it has with the amount of cars that are part of the club.

But for him – it’s the club’s mantra was the main driving force to its growth and something Christopher is proud of.

“We love having all makes and models. We love meeting people and their cars and talking about their passions. It all becomes part of the club,” Christopher said.

“I always knew there would be people out there who had similar interests and cars like mine, but I didn’t expect that some of our social events would have 1000 people.

“We are a club where nothing in particular stands out because everyone is important. We love and accept every type of make and model.

“We then decided to join Motorsport Australia, so we could expand our motorsport activity, which turned out to be a fantastic decision.

“Motorsport Australia has been amazing to be associated with and they have helped us do entry level hill climbs.

“But I couldn’t do this without the support of my family. They have all become a part of it. This never could have happened.

While they do plenty of social and motorsport activities, Christopher still believes that the club’s display at the Grand Prix is one of the best things they do year-on-year.

“Basically the displays are another thing we can do for members to give them opportunity to show off their pride and joys at a prestigious event like GP,” Johnson added

“It’s been amazing doing it. We have had many highlights over the years, but the one that tops them all is the year that some of our hot rods were part of the driver’s parade.

“We’ve been doing day dot. The position we are in now is the best we have.

"It’s great because we have some great vehicles on display this year. One that sticks out is the Dnepr motorcycle, which was shipped over from the Ukraine a week before the war began, so it’s lucky we have it here now.

“They are very rare and date back to World War 2, so to have one now is incredible and something we can admire for a long time.”
