Tasmania all set for TARGA milestone

Friday 22 April, 2022
TARGA Tasmania is back for the 30th running this month.

The Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its most iconic event in style next week with the 2022 TARGA Tasmania.

Starting on Tuesday 26 April, the third and final round of the 2021/2022 season will see around 400 crews complete the tarmac rally – more than half of which are entered in the competitive component of the event.

Awaiting the hundreds of crews in the famous six-day tarmac rally is around 579 competitive kilometres spread across 34 stages on some of the picturesque roads in Tasmania.

The event will see crews visit plenty of locations across the apple isle.

From major towns and cities such as Launceston, Hobart and Davenport to some of the more well-known areas and landmarks such as Hellyer Gorge, Lake Plismoll and Mount Arrowsmith.

The schedule also includes some beautiful locations for the daily lunch breaks, where fans can see the cars up close and meet teams, including St Helens, Penguin and Sheffield.

While the course itself features a mixture of new stages and old favourites, it’ a similar story in the bumper entry list.

From event winners and national champions and first or second year rookies to old timers just along for the ride or special tour participants- there is a variety of crews with all sorts of experience entered.

Headlining the entry list are six-time TARGA Tasmania winners Jason and John White, who will be keen to get back on the winners’ list after a while off it – their last win being the 2019 TARGA High Country.

Closely rivalling Jason White as the driver to beat is Eddie Maguire, who won his first ever TARGA Tasmania last year but was unable to enjoy it properly due to the unfortunate fatalities that occurred throughout the event.

A number of other notable drivers entered include RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship regular Luke Anear, Tony Quinn, Angus Kennard, Peter Nunn, Stephen Maguire and Jeffery Morton - the latter enters the round having won February’s TARGA High Country.

One of the most recent entries to the event and coming straight from the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour last weekend is Grant Denyer.

Behind the wheel of one two Dutton Group Subaru WRX STi, the other being driven by Mike Sinclair, Denyer is entered in the GT Production class and will have the experienced Ben Searcy as his co-driver.

“My first TARGA was in 2006, when I won Dancing With The Stars the first time,” Denyer said of his return to the championship.

"TARGA Tasmania is hands down my favourite motorsport event.

“The spectacular Tasmanian wilderness, world class roads and a gorgeous motor vehicle underneath you is rev-head nirvana. It just doesn’t get any better.”

Outside of the lunch breaks, there will be plenty of opportunities fans will have to be able to watch the cars go by – the most notable being George Town Street Stage on Wednesday afternoon as the cars go round the streets of George Town.

The popular TARGAfest will also take place on Wednesday, which will add onto Paradise Stage and will continue long into the night.

All spectator points are free for fans to attend, but all attendees must follow instructions when wanting to watch cars.
